Entry requirements
This is a beginners class suitable for people with limited or no previous experience. Students must be able to understand English.
What you will need
Pen and notebook. A ring binder a4 sized folder to keep sewing samples in and handouts in. The tutor will let you know what equipment you will need to bring for the following lessons. However, a basic sewing kit would be an advantage for you to invest in pre-course.

Skills you can develop include altering garments, sewing techniques and guidance to help you complete a garment from a commercial pattern.
This will be a class of mixed-level of sewing. So everyone will be working at their own pace with guidance from the tutor.
To be able to do this course, you must be able to use a sewing machine.

I have already used a sewing machine and done basic sewing for example tote bags and little sip bags will this course still benefit me?
Yes, this course is designed for anyone who wants to learn to be a confident and able sewer. The course doesn’t just focus on people who want knowledge and skills for small sewing projects but also larger scale sewing projects one might need to undertake in the future such as making products by bulk or a range of garments for example.
Do we get to make anything that we can keep and take home in the course?

Katie Young Gerald is a multi-award-winning designer and supplier to British hospitality and heritage brands.
As well as being the founder of Bespoke Textiles, Katie is also the author of the book The Textile Touch on ‘How Five-Star Hospitality and Heritage Brands Create Their Signature Style Through Textiles’.
Katie’s passion is for second hand and vintage-inspired collections and is known for being the voice of Style & Sustainable supply.
The 3 hour workshop will come with inspiring choice of scarves, trims and trinkets to embellish either you own jacket or one we can provide for a small fee. Do this with a group of fellow sustainable style and upcycling lovers, in an all purpose workroom and learn from upcycling clothing tutor with over 40 years of experience. You will need some sewing experience and can bring your own materials to add that special touch.

THINGS TO REMEMBER
You don’t have to bring anything but if you have a jacket in your size that you would love to update this is the best sustainable practice you could have and would save waste and money!
Scarves, trims and sparkly things will be provided but feel free to bring the things you’d love to customise on your jacket.
If you do need a denim jacket – please email admin@lmhs.org.uk your size and preferred colour (i.e. pale denim or dark blue or charcoal – cost of jacket £30 would be added to the course fee of £65) at least 10 days before the course.
You need to know how to use a sewing machine in order to finish everything in the allocated time.
Sokha Soong received a Bachelor of Fashion in 2005 and was as Garment Technologist (Quality Controller) for many high street brands. She also worked freelance for a number of years for M&S, River Island, Monsoon, to name a few.
She has also freelanced for various brands like Nicole Farhi, French Connection UK, Oasis, and various small boutiques.
Luciana Pulcini is the founder and owner of LucianaSoul which has been based in London since 2014, officially registered in 2019. LucianaSoul (the story behind the textiles) is a concept of sustainable consumption and production. Her mission is to reduce textile waste, but also to highlight to the fashion industry – and people in general – new ways of creating a brand using existing resources. Luciana’s venture began after she observed the huge amount of clothes left on the streets of London. At the time she was homeless and had very little to wear. With her passion and natural talent plus her Italian diploma in tailoring, she developed ideas for upcycling. She also studied online courses with the British Library on building a sustainable fashion business. In 2016 Luciana was the recipient of the FDC Young Designer Award for ‘the most important alternative to fast fashion’-. She also took part in Catwalks for Disabled Girls (December 2018) at the Old Biscuit Factory, Bermondsey. In July 2019 Luciana exhibited in Italy with the NGO ‘Andes’ (National Association of Families of People with Intellectual and/or Relational Disabilities).

You will be introduced to the general principles and skills relating to sewing and garment making, also using a commercial pattern.

Commercial Sewing Pattern that says Easy or Very Easy. No Button holes, zips and stretch fabric for the easy pattern.

This course is an introduction to pattern cutting for both men and women. It is aims to give you knowledge and understanding of pattern cutting and how it is used to develop the desired designs. For this beginner’s class, you will learn to construct your own personal block. Learn how to take measurements and how to sew up your own toile, (a sample of your block made from calico)
The Block you can choose from for womenswear are: CLOSE FITTING BODICE BLOCK – Ideal for close fitted tops and dresses EASY FITTING BODICE BLOCK – Ideal for loose fitted tops and dresses THE ONE-PIECE SLEEVE BLOCK – ideal for both blocks above
The block you can choose from for menswear are: THE CLASSIC SHIRT BLOCK THE TAILORED SHIRT BLOCK – a closer fitting shirt with a wider shoulder line THE CASUAL SHIRT BLOCK THE ONE-PIECE SLEEVE – ideal for all three blocks
Entry Requirements: This course is for adult learners (18+) men and women, with no knowledge or experience in pattern cutting or sewing.

What do I need to bring for this course? You will need to have 1x folder, 1x mechanical pencil 0.5 or 0.7, 1x rubber and a tube storage for carrying your pattern pieces
Is this course suitable for men? This course is for both men and women adult students. They can choose to develop blocks for men or womenswear.
Will I need any pattern cutting experience for this course? You do not need any fashion pattern cutting or sewing experience for this course.
What level is this course? This course starts at beginner level when you join and will progress towards advance as you continue. You will be guided through each block that you will choose to learn each term. The pace will be flexible to the pace you are comfortable in learning. Which means you can carry on into the next term if you choose to carry on. Your tutor will do her best to guide you to be at similar pace as others in your group.
How long will it take to complete a block? It will take about 5-6 weeks for student to complete a block. They would have drafted a personal block, made up a toile, done a fitting, and make any adjustment to the block if needed.
What is a block? A block is a foundation pattern constructed to fit an average or individual figure. The designer uses a foundation pattern (block) as a basis for making the pattern for a design.
What is a toile? This is the finished block made up in calico to check the proportion and shape.
What is a pattern? A developed design drafted from block. They may include style lines, tucks, gathers, pleats or draped but still have the basic fit of the block used.
What is a sample? It is the design cut out in fabric and made up. This is an important stage for manufacture and individual to test their pattern before going into bulk production or cutting into expensive fabric for individual.

During these sessions there will be an opportunity to contribute to Melanie Bowles’s stitching project adding your own marks to a large linen cloth, inviting you to stitch together. No knowledge of embroidery is required – learn and explore the wealth of stitches, make your mark on the large embroidery cloth and enjoy the benefits of stitching together.
There is no tutor for this session but a member of the All Sewn Up team will be present.
All Sewn Up’s Makers’ Homework Club is a calm and friendly environment where you can practice without a tutor a variety of textile-based techniques: knitting, crochet, embroidery, mending, up cycling and clothes making – bring your own projects.
ASUP students who have been inducted in the use of the sewing machine may use them.
This session is aimed at adults (18+) who are able to work without a tutor on their own projects.
