What you will learn

During the sessions we will also cover a range of mental health wellbeing topics, depending on the interests of the group:

Assertiveness; Finding motivation; How do we Change?; Tips and techniques for relaxation; Journaling and sketch books; Optimism; Friends, family and community; Art and creativity; Managing emotions; Recovering from disappointment; Caring for ourselves; How do we know when we need to get help? Diet, nutrition and mood.

Entry requirements

This is a beginners class suitable for people with limited or no previous experience. Students must be able to understand English.

What you will need

Pen and notebook. A ring binder a4 sized folder to keep sewing samples in and handouts in. The tutor will let you know what equipment you will need to bring for the following lessons.  However, a basic sewing kit would be an advantage for you to invest in pre-course.

Unfortunately, these classes/workshops are set up to be in person practices especially due to the nature of the work which is very physical and hands-on.

After the first lesson you will know what you need to bring with you which will include fabrics and your own basic sewing kit. List available at first session. Some materials can be purchased from the tutor. Price list available in the classroom. Basic Materials are:
-Dressmakers pins
-Seam Unpicker
-Calico Fabric (1-2meters worth)
-Dressmakers chalk markers
-A reel of strong thread (recommended Guitermann)
-Fabric Scissors and Embroidery (small) Scissors

Bring along your sewing project and be guided by the tutor.

Skills you can develop include altering garments, sewing techniques and guidance to help you complete a garment from a commercial pattern.

This will be a class of mixed-level of sewing. So everyone will be working at their own pace with guidance from the tutor.

To be able to do this course, you must be able to use a sewing machine.

If there are any questions, please email the tutor at least two weeks before the course starts to guarantee a response.

I have already used a sewing machine and done basic sewing for example tote bags and little sip bags will this course still benefit me?

Yes, this course is designed for anyone who wants to learn to be a confident and able sewer. The course doesn’t just focus on people who want knowledge and skills for small sewing projects but also larger scale sewing projects one might need to undertake in the future such as making products by bulk or a range of garments for example.

Do we get to make anything that we can keep and take home in the course?

Yes.

What you will learn

You will be introduced to the general principles and skills relating to sewing and garment making, also using a commercial pattern.

Entry requirements

A beginners class is suitable for people with limited or no previous experience. Students must be able to understand English.

Commercial Sewing Pattern that says Easy or Very Easy.
No Button holes, zips and stretch fabric for the easy pattern.

A basic sewing kit consisting of fabric scissors, trimming scissors, paper scissors, dressmaker sewing pins with glass heads(about 38mm long), tape measure, fabric marker, seam ripper and hand sewing needles.

During these sessions there will be an opportunity to contribute to Melanie Bowles’s stitching project adding your own marks to a large linen cloth, inviting you to stitch together.  No knowledge of embroidery is required – learn and explore the wealth of stitches, make your mark on the large embroidery cloth and enjoy the benefits of stitching together.

There is no tutor for this session but a member of the All Sewn Up team will be present.

All Sewn Up’s Makers’ Homework Club is a calm and friendly environment where you can practice without a tutor a variety of textile-based techniques: knitting, crochet, embroidery, mending, up cycling and clothes making – bring your own projects.

ASUP students who have been inducted in the use of the sewing machine may use them.

This session is aimed at adults (18+) who are able to work without a tutor on their own projects.

During this 4 hour session:
Students will learn how to thread the machine.
Learn how to use the machine and its functions and complete four different seams:

Plain seam
French seam
Flat-fell seam
Lapped seam

Make a simple item such as a cushion cover or fabric tote bag.

The course is for adult learners (+18) with limited or no previous experience. Students could then enroll on the Beginners Clothed Making course.

Sewing & Textiles Club (no tutor)

A calm and friendly environment where you can practice sewing and complete projects. An opportunity to use the amazing facilities at All Sewn Up.

There is NO TUTOR for this session, but a member of the All Sewn Up Team will be present.  Please also note that THIS IS NOT A DROP-IN SESSION.  You must pre-book via email admin@lmhs.org.uk at least a week before your chosen Monday of attendance to use the club.

All Sewn Up’s Sewing & Textiles Club is a calm and friendly environment where you can practice without tutor, a variety of textile-based techniques such as Soft Furnishing, Clothes Making, Embroidery, Knitting, Crochet, etc.

This is a unique opportunity to use on an hourly basis, the amazing facilities at All Sewn Up – including large cutting and ironing tables, Bernina sewing and over-locker machines, pressure-steam irons, etc.

Aimed at both budding and experienced sewers who wish to advance or complete projects, as well as at students and practitioners of Fashion and Textile Design disciplines who need a well-equipped workshop to experiment with their creative ideas.

New users will be inducted into the safe use of All Sewn Up’s workshop equipment and Health & Safety procedures on first session each term. Introduction and Course Content

For this course, artist Richard McVetis draws on his love of stitching, paying special attention to time, labour and care in the making of Embroidery pieces.

This workshop will explore a combination of traditional Hand Embroidery techniques, how you do it and why you do it. We will explore the tenderness; the slowness and rhythms of hand stitching; the versatility and strengths of embroidery for drawing and mark making; and the pleasure in having time to make.

This is an experimental approach to stitching and draws on the imagination of each participant: create textures and patterns, work a stitch in different threads changing its scale and spacing, work freely, and combine stitches to mark make and draw.

Practical help will be given by demonstrating the many ways in which this can be achieved using the simplest of hand embroidery techniques, no knowledge of particular and precise embroidery techniques are needed. The emphasis will be on both group and individual tuition.

We will learn the following stitches: Running, Back, Straight, Couching, Whipped Running, Seeding, Stem, Fly, Blanket and Chain.

Objectives:

-To develop traditional Hand Embroidery skills
-To translate your own thoughts and inspiration into stitch
-To develop an understanding of embroidery as a contemporary art medium

Introduction and Course Content

Intermediate and advanced students will be supported in the making of garments using commercial or own patterns under the supervision and assistance of our qualified tutor.

This is a mixed level class, you will work with others at different levels.

Teaching will be in groups and on an individual one-to-one basis.

The tutor will present examples and samples and discuss the construction of your garment. There will be some demonstrations. You can practice methods taught by the tutor’s demonstrations. Students can take notes, photos of demonstrations.

Entry Requirements

This course is an intermediate level, suitable for people who have some knowledge of using a sewing machine and constructing a garment. Adult Learners 18+

What you will need to bring along to the class:

Commercial sewing pattern at a level you are comfortable with.

The fabric and haberdashery to make this garment.

A basic sewing kit consisting of fabric scissors, trimming scissors, paper scissors, dressmaker sewing pins with glass heads(about 38mm long), tape measure, fabric marker, seam ripper and hand sewing needles.

You must provide your own materials, haberdashery and thread to complete your garment.
