In collaboration with Textile Design at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, All Sewn Up is delivering a series of free workshops this summer. We invite you to join us for sessions that explore knit and community, enjoy the benefits of stitching together and / or try new techniques with electronic textiles. All levels of experience welcome.

Thinking Through Knitting with knitwear Practitioner Sicgmone Kludje
Friday 21st June 10:00 – 13:00

During this workshop attendees are invited to explore their own individual and social identity (gender, race, class, ethnicity, ability, geographical location etc.) through textile material outcomes and the process of Arm Knitting.

Exploring various yarn textures and material qualities, participants will create their own individual yarn threads and will be encouraged to weave stories to create a potential new narrative. How can knitting be used as a tool to share both individual and collective stories?

If participants coming to the workshop could please bring along an item of cloth or textile that they don’t mind using as part of the textile piece – for example an old t-shirt, dress or scarf. This could be an item that evokes a particular memory of a place or person. This is an important part of the workshop. Please note: That you will be re-using the material you bring on the day, so please bring something that you don’t mind cutting up.

Techniques used: Arm knitting and finger knitting, all levels are welcome.

e-textiles: Digital Embroidery and Coding Workshop with textile designer B Claxton

Have you ever wanted to explore embedded electronics in fabrics where your textile can light up or make a sound? During this workshop we will explore e-textiles (electronic textiles where textiles are active rather than passive) through digital Embroidery and Coding. We will be using  PEmbroider an open library for computational embroidery with Processing.

Through the software and embroidery machine we will explore how to create change and develop different stitch styles and techniques. Learn how to convert a basic image into a simple stitch pattern, investigate different Hatch Modes and how these can alter the design.

Please bring inspiring images to the session or we can take inspiration from the Stitch School Cloth, which will be at All Sewn Up.

Fabrics will be provided if we are using different threads and fabrics will also alter the design: using Conductive thread, Ceramic thread, wool threads.

All levels welcome – no prior experience of coding is needed.
