About

Lady Margaret Hall Settlement

Welcome to Lady Margaret Hall Settlement (LMHS), a Registered Charity that has been providing training, education and community development in Lambeth since 1897.

Having offered a wide variety of courses and enterprises throughout the decades, LMHS currently runs All Sewn Up (ASUP) – a project started in 1990 to deliver high quality sewing and textile classes.

Over the years, ASUP has given countless women and men the opportunity to train in the highly skilled professional field of Soft Furnishing and Home Textiles. Many have gone on to establish their own businesses or work in the field, brilliantly overcoming long-standing difficulties caused by socio-educational deprivation or mental health issues.

More recently we started offering courses without formal qualifications to cater for an even wider variety of people from all backgrounds. These courses not only provide useful skills in Soft Furnishing and Clothes Making but also constitute a welcome break from everyday chores and commitments, in a friendly and supportive environment. Many of our students come back year after year, furthering their sewing skills and having a great time along the way too!

A long-term student says of All Sewn Up:

“There are very few community projects in this area, unless you have small children. All Sewn Up is a melting pot of people from different backgrounds and ages.
I have met so many new people, which has been not only enjoyable, but has opened my eyes to the way other people live their lives.
Seeing other people’s projects has inspired me to try techniques I wouldn’t have known about.
Lastly, and I think for me importantly, Thursday morning is what I joke about as being my ‘therapy’. A time I look forward to and get so much pleasure from.” A.E. 12/7/2018

We have great plans for All Sewn Up, with new exciting classes alongside Clothes Making, including: Embroidery, Hat Making/Millinery, Clothes Upcycle & Mend and General Sewing Techniques as well as a weekly Sewing & Textiles Club. We have introduced daytime, evening and weekend short courses, some with concessionary rates, all keeping fees to a minimum. We are looking for many more students to welcome to our spacious and well-equipped workshop in North Lambeth (Unit 1, The Co-op Centre, 11 Mowll Street, London SW9 6BG, 020 7480 0216).

As funding becomes ever harder to come by, we rely on these community courses to keep ASUP going in the sure knowledge that our students greatly benefit from the satisfaction of seeing their work – be it garments or home textiles – enjoyed by family and friends as well as themselves. It also helps us provide free classes whenever possible, to introduce young and old to the pleasure and creative potential of sewing and textiles.

Donations are most welcome – please contact us for information on how to contribute (email admin@lmhs.org.uk).
