Course Content

In this wonderful new Course, you will be introduced to the beautiful craft of English Paper Piecing, an ancient way of making patchwork by hand which dates back to at least the 18th century.

English Paper Piecing is simply the practice of basting fabric shapes to paper, either with thread or glue, and then sewing the edges together to form patchwork of varying shapes and sizes. This slow and gentle way of making patchwork is truly lovely, and moreover it is also wonderfully sociable and stress-free.

Beginners will be working initially with 2 inch hexagon paper shapes, and will learn the basics of:

– how to cut the fabric;

– how to quickly and easily baste it to the paper by using the glue-basting method;

– and then by using a simple whipstitch, you will learn how to sew the separate hexagons together to form a flower.

You will then be shown how to transform the patchwork flower into a lovely, unique keepsake: a lavender-filled sachet or a pin-cushion.

This class additionally will allow you to go on to work with other shapes and sizes and to create your own patchwork, as the same simple techniques are used for all English paper piecing patchwork.

More advanced students will be supported and guided into making larger English Paper Piecing quilting projects, such as cushion covers, table runners or bedspreads. They will be shown how to complete their items with:

– adding a variety of wadding and backing fabrics to the patchwork piece

– quilting the layers together with hand or machine stitching

– finishing the item with bias binding

Entry Requirements

All levels. This course is for adult learners (18+) with no knowledge of sewing as well as for learners who have previous experience.

Please note: rotary cutters and scissors may be used by students in this class so sufficient hand dexterity is necessary to handle the sharp equipment safely.

Debra Webster

Debra Webster is a self-taught patchworker and quilter who finally learned to sew after many years as an English teacher in schools and universities and hasn’t stopped since. She enjoys making all types of patchwork, and mostly quilts by hand.

Debra has made quilts for the children’s charity Project Linus, and is currently setting up a social sewing group for Mind in Camden. Her greatest love is the traditional and ancient method of English paper piecing, a lovely way of hand sewing patchwork in exactly the same way it has been done for centuries: a slow, gentle and highly therapeutic process.

In general Debra is a passionate advocate of a relaxed, creative and stress-free approach to patchwork and quilting, in order to make it as accessible to as many people as possible, and to bring as many people together as possible.
