Have fun making scarves, granny squares for cushion covers or blankets, crochet necklaces, coasters, or any other knitting or crochet project you’d like help with!

Come and join us for an evening with Lady Margaret Hall Settlement Chair Danielle Arnaud, tutors and students, to see what we do and have a chance to ask questions, suggest courses, and enrol for our great sewing classes for the Summer Term and beyond.

Clothes Making tutor Grace Carter-Allen and new Embroidery tutor Richard McVetis will be to hand to present their classes and answer any questions, as well as to show samples from their work.

Some of our currents students might also be able to come to champion our classes, tell you what it’s like, and show off some of their finished projects.

New website and course update

Lady Margaret Hall Settlement is delighted to announce our newest All Sewn Up programme of Sewing and Textiles Classes starting this Autumn Term 2018:

We are excited to introduce brand new classes in Embroidery with Fran Burden on Thursday afternoon and Millinery with Carla Rose on Friday afternoon, alongside our well-established evening Clothes Making & Fashion classes with Grace Carter-Allen who will also be teaching a new Clothes Upcycle & Mend Monday afternoon class and an expanded General Sewing Techniques class on Friday morning.

Introduction and Course Content

This is a class for anyone with an interest in general sewing, be it Clothes Making or basic Soft Furnishing. It is an opportunity to learn or refresh essential and advanced sewing techniques applicable to both fields whilst completing a variety of projects of your choice, such as simple garments or cushion covers with zips and piping.

Sewing techniques covered in this class include:
Introduction and consolidation to the use of sewing and overlocking machines
Use of a variety of machine feet including zipper foot
Beginners may learn to:
Insert zips, pockets, collars and cuffs as well as piping
Apply a variety of seams and stitches, by hand and with a machine
Learners with previous knowledge will be able to apply the above to more complex projects, including shirts and jackets as well as small curtains and blinds.

Entry Requirements

All levels. This course is for adult learners (18+) with no knowledge of sewing as well as for learners who have previous experience.

Course Content

Students will learn how to deconstruct a second-hand item (their own old clothes) that they will have brought to the class. They will aim to create a new piece by recomposing and reconstructing the original garment.  At the end of 5 or 6 sessions, students should have transformed their selected garments, ready to show off and to wear.

Some sewing ability and how to use a sewing machine will be necessary.

Introduction and Course Content

Learn to make a personalised Overnight Cloth Bag in just 2 sessions of 3.5 hours each over 2 days midweek or weekend.

This beautiful and versatile bag features zip, straps, lining and pocket. You can choose from a great selection of fabrics at All Sewn Up and specialist materials, including double-ended zips, are included in the course fee.

In this Step-by-Step course you will:

design & plan a box-style bag with zip, straps, and pockets;

learn how to choose suitable fabrics for outside and lining;

apply a double-sided zip;

insert a pocket, and much more.

All students will be supported in the making of the bag, learning any relevant new skills as required, under the supervision and assistance of our qualified sewing tutor.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adult (18+) learners who have some experience of using a sewing machine. This intensive course is not suitable for absolute beginners.
