for Adults on Benefits or Low Income

SEWING MACHINE SKILLS

Tuesday 28th November 2017

10am-2.30pm (incl. 30mins lunch break)

 

Learn how to thread and use a Domestic Sewing Machine - including a variety of stitches (straight, zigzag, decorative); sew a variety of hems for uses in Clothes Making and Soft Furnishing.

Make an envelope CUSHION COVER TO TAKE HOME

choosing from a selection of beautiful designer fabrics

ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED (including cushion pad)

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and for people with previous sewing experience who need to refresh their skills.

CLOTHES UPCYCLE & MEND

Friday 1st December 2017

10am-2.30pm (incl. 30mins lunch break)

 

Learn how to upcycle clothes update their style to the latest fashion and mend new or old clothes to fit properly. Sewing techniques you may learn include:

  • Shorten or Lengthen skirts' or trousers' Hems neatly
  • Modify collars or sleeves
  • Take in width or let out with the use of fabric panels
  • Insert or replace zips, and much more

 

Bring up to 3 garments to upcycle or mend.

For this workshop basic hand and machine sewing skills are necessary: learners will have to do the sewing as directed by the tutor.

FREE SEWING WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS

terms & conditions

These workshops are aimed primarily at people on receipt of benefits or low income, based on the same concessionary rules as other adult education institutions such as Morley College, as follows:

  • In receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
  • In receipt of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA - WRAG)
  • Unemployed, in receipt of any state benefit and need skills to get back to work
  • Working, in receipt of any benefit and family income is below £22k (Self-Declaration)
  • Mainly reliant on State Pension (both aged under and over 65)
  • A dependant of someone on benefits
  • A full-time student at another institution
  • An Asylum Seeker

If you don't fall in any of the above categories but feel that you would benefit from our Free Sewing Workshops, please get in touch and we might be able to fit you in depending on availability of spaces. People in the above categories do take priority.
