Introduction and Course Content

Make a trendy Beret or Baker Boy Hat to complement your own fashion style in this NEW inspiring sewing class. Students will learn the basics of Hat-Making pattern cutting and sewing machine construction techniques in order to make their own basic 6- or 8- Section Crown hat, fitted to size, from flat pattern to finished piece.

Students will learn to:
Draw out millinery patterns to fit own head size
Create a 6- or 8- Section Crown from paper patterns to 3D toiles
Adapt patterns in order to personalise your design
Design, Make and Insert a Peak
Sew a variety of seam finishes
Use a range of Professional Millinery construction & finishing techniques to take home a beautiful Hat.

Students will learn how to use fusible interfacing fabrics to give a hat structure and look at various peak inserts to achieve different effects/styles.
Demonstrations will be given for all construction techniques and students will create a portfolio of their own samples for future reference, before moving on to make the finished piece.

Technical tips and advice will be given in relation to how to handle different fabric weights and whether special equipment will need to be used.
All students will be supported in the making of the hat, learning any relevant new skills as required, under the supervision and assistance of our qualified Millinery tutor.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adult (18+) learners who have previous experience of using a sewing machine or can use a machine with some confidence. Basic hand sewing capabilities useful but not essential.

You will have the use of all equipment in the workroom including: large tables, sewing machines, over-lockers, irons & metal rulers.

Material Costs

You will need to supply all fabrics, haberdashery & your own sewing kit, list available at first session. Some materials can be purchased from the tutor. Price list available in the classroom. Specialist Millinery Buckram and Bondaweb to make a peak as well as toile fabric will be provided free of charge.
